You’ve selected the perfect invitation, font, sizing and color. Now it’s time to address and send them. Knowing how to address your wedding invitations can be overwhelming. In general, the outer envelope of your wedding invitation should be more formal, with titles and full names, while the inner envelope is more informal, leaving out first names or titles and last names. Here are some basic guidelines:
A couple that is married
Outside the envelope
Mr. and Mrs. David Baker
On the inner envelope
Mr. and Mrs. Baker
Or
David and Peggy
A married couple with different last names
On the outer envelope
Mr. David Baker and Mrs. Peggy Kendall
On the inner envelope
Mr. Baker and Mrs. Kendall
Or
David and Peggy
An unmarried couple living together
On the outer envelope
Mr. David Baker
Ms. Peggy Kendall
On the inner envelope
Mr. Baker
Ms. Kendall
Families with children
If you are planning to include children at your wedding, children should be included on the inner envelope of their parents' invitation by their names. For girls under 18, use “Miss." Boys do not get a title until they are 18.
On the outer envelope
Mr. and Mrs. David Baker
On the inner envelope
David, Peggy, Stephanie, Christopher & Gabriella
Children of the family that are 18 or older
Any guest over 18 should receive their own invitation (unless they are living at home with their parents)
On the outer envelope
Ms. Stephanie Desantis
Or
Mr. Chris Welsh
On the inner envelope
Ms. Stephanie
Or
Mr. Chris
Helpful tip: If you are planning on having a kid free wedding it would be beneficial to have immediate family and the bridal party help spread the word that you desire the wedding to be adults only.
